So, you are over the age of 18 and are unsure whether to go out and get a place or keep living with your parents. You wonder to yourself if it is a good idea. After all, TV shows, movies, and books have made moving out after high school the standard for young adults, especially in the USA and North America. So you are torn. To stay or to go.
Or maybe you already moved out of your parents’ house many years ago and are thinking about moving back in. Do you wonder if it is a great idea or not? Moving back in with your parents or not moving out at all is a big decision. So what to do?
Well, whether you are a college or trade student thinking about staying at home, or a much older person considering moving back home, here are 5 things to consider to help you in your decision.
- Relationship with parents
The first thing to consider when thinking bout your living situation is your relationship with your family. If your relationship with your parents was not good growing up or if there was abuse in the family moving out of your childhood home or not moving back in again is the wisest choice. After all you should try to break the cycle of abuse since your future children could suffer the same fate if you move back in without first fixing said relationship or accepting it was bad to beginning with in the first place. Now if your parents and you have a great or at least a non abusive working relationship and you want to stay or more back in then do so. The people you live with can affect your health in the long run so pick wisely which choice will be best for you. This is the first thing to consider when deciding to move out or back in with your parents as an post high school student.
2. Economic situation
The second thing to consider when thinking about moving out or moving in with your parents beside relationship is your economic situation. Are you currently struggling to pay the bills and have to results to things like getting a loan to help paid off the bills? Well moving back home might be the better option. I know you are a “adult” now and think yourself grown but its okay to let go of the shame of being an adult living at home and put yourself first. Those people who judges you are not going to paid your bills. So pack up and move back in with your parents or grandparents -if your relationship with your parents are really bad-. This is the second thing to take into consideration when deciding if to move out or more back in with your parents post high school.
3. Location
The third thing to consider when deciding if you want to move in or out of your parents house is location. Location, location, location! This important if you want to decide if you should move out or stay in your childhood home. If you already moved out and your current location is cheaper then your parents location to living then stay at your current location. For instance if you are living in one of the cheap states like Tennessee and your parents are living in California then compare the two location price and stay at the lowest. Remember your are moving back in with your parents or grandparents not to live like a freeloader but to help pay the bills as well. Don’t move to a place that would cost you more to live then another. Now if it is the opposite and your parents live in Tennessee and you currently in California then pack up and move back home. It’s cheaper to live in a cheaper state then to live in a expense state. So do take location into consideration when deciding to move in or out of your parents home. This is the third thing to consider when making that decision.
4. Martial status
The fourth thing to think about when it comes to staying with your parents or moving back with your parents post high school is whether or not you are single. If you are single moving back in with your parents if great. They know you and hopefully you all get along well. Well if you where not single that dynamic changes. Your boyfriend or girlfriend or husband or wife might not be a good fit for your parents for whatever reason. Maybe to them he or she is bad for you. Or maybe to them your parents are the bad ones. Either way having a romantic partner changes the dynamic of your relationship with your parents and this cause make or break your chances of either staying with them or moving back in. This is the fourth thing to think about when considering moving back in or not moving out at all post high school.
5. Goals for the future
The last but not least thing to do when decision to stay with your parents or move back in after high school is your goals for the future. What are you goals for 1 to 5 years from the day you move back in or remain with your parents?
Are you planning to buy a house in the next 1 to 5 years? Well moving back in with your parents and saving up your renting money can help you reach that goal. After all if you have at least 10 to 20 percentage saved up for a down payment banks are more likely to lend you a mortgage loan then if you didn’t. What about a car? Are you looking to buy a car? Same thing. Thus moving back in with your parents in order to reach your savings goals is idea. After all when you are living with your parents your chances of paying half the moment of what you are paying in bills increased. You pay your parents – you are not a freeloader after all- about half for most of the bills and bang you are saving more then if you lived on your own. So if you are looking to save for something long term the fifth but not least thing to do is consider moving back in or just simply staying with your parents post high school.
These are the top 5 things to consider when making the decision to move back home and live with your parents or not leave at all.
