Mabel Jetsons was late to breakfast at her local middle school, Winter Hills Middle School. The reason for her tardiness was that her older sister, Ashley Jetsons, took too long in the restroom. By the time Ashley was finished using the bathroom, it was already 7:50 a.m., leaving them with only ten minutes to make the seven-minute drive to school. Classes at Winter Hills began at 8:00 a.m., which meant no breakfast for Mabel this breezing December morning.
Mabel couldn’t shake her frustration as they rushed out the door. She loved the school breakfast, filled with delicious options that made mornings a little brighter. Each day, she looked forward to fluffy pancakes, fresh fruit, and the warm aroma of waffles wafting through the cafeteria. It wasn’t just the food; it was the company too. Mabel enjoyed gathering with her friends, sharing stories and laughter before class commenced each day. They would swap jokes and talk about their weekend plans and homework answers, making those fleeting moments feel special and fun. It was one of her favorite parts of middle school, and now it seemed all that joy was at risk because of her sister’s lateness.
“Oh, great, just what I needed!” Mabel muttered under her breath, glancing over at Ashley, who was blissfully unaware or at least pretending to be of Mabel’s growing annoyance. Being an eighth grader, Ashley had always had her own set of priorities, and it often felt like Mabel was a mere afterthought. This was just another example of Ashley’s inconsiderate behavior, and Mabel couldn’t help but feel resentful. She often wondered if Ashley even realized how her actions impacted others, especially her younger sister.
Mabel was especially thankful that this was the last year she would have to share a school year with her older sister. After this year, Ashley would graduate and transition to high school, while Mabel would still have two more years left in middle school. The thought of not having to deal with Ashley’s antics for a while brought a small smile to Mabel’s face, despite her current frustration. It seemed like a beacon of hope, a light at the end of the tunnel that made her situation feel a bit more bearable.
Thus, Mabel began to imagine what the next school years would be like. By the time she followed Ashley to high school, she was confident her sister would have her own car or at least be riding with her best friend, Mary Ann Eastsons, and her older brother, James Samson Eastsons. James, who was just a few years older, was already budgeting and doing tutoring jobs around their school districts to save up for his first car. Mabel knew that once he turned sixteen and got his driver’s license, life would be much easier for both her and Ashley. Because her mother would no longer need to take Ashley to school anymore, Mabel could finally arrive on time without her sister’s delays turning breakfast into a chaotic race.
A smile graced Mabel’s lips as she thought about that freedom. Yep, she couldn’t wait for her annoying older sister to be off to high school, no longer the cause of her unnecessary problems. She envisioned a school day where she could approach the breakfast table with confidence, collect her food leisurely, and sit down to enjoy it – all while basking in the company of her friends, unbothered by time constraints.
While their mother drove to school, thoughts of freedom and independence filled Mabel’s mind, momentarily distracting her from her irritation. Perhaps their paths would cross less often, and maybe Ashley would become a little more considerate as they both transitioned into the next stages of their lives. That thought was comforting, and Mabel hoped that their relationship might improve with some distance starting next school year.
For now, though, frustration ruled the morning. Mabel firmly resolved to make the best of the situation, stealing glances at the time and hoping against hope they wouldn’t miss breakfast entirely, thus denying her even a fleeting glance of the day at Mary Ann Eastson’s little brother, Peter Adam Eastson. She cherished those moments—they were like bright sparks in her daily routine, filled with smiles and innocent chatter. Each encounter with Peter brought an unexpected surge of excitement, a feeling she looked forward to as much as her breakfast.
Yep, besides her love for Winter Hills Middle School breakfast, Mabel also had another reason for wanting to go to school early each morning during breakfast hours. And that reason was Peter Adam Eastson, her older sister’s best friend Mary Ann Eastson’s younger brother. Mabel admired Peter’s friendly demeanor, i.e his smile and witty comebacks, and their quick exchanges always made her day feel a little brighter, even if it was only for a short while. The anticipation of seeing him in the cafeteria gave her something to work toward each morning, a small slice of joy that she clung to amidst the chaos of her mornings with Ashley. But alas today it appeared she was not only going to have to miss breakfast but also catching a glance or two at her crush of the year, Peter Adam Eastson. Life was not fair, and she wished her older sister Ashley had the worst day ever! Because Mabel definitely was.
Ashley Jetsons watched her little sister Mabel head off to class, a scowl on the 6th grader’s lips, and sighed deeply, feeling a wave of frustration wash over her. She had not meant for them to be late, but sometimes, life threw unexpected curveballs that one simply could not control. It had just happened so fast, and now she felt the weight of responsibility resting heavily on her shoulders. It wasn’t her fault, she reminded herself, trying to quell the guilt eating away at her.
This morning, when she had gone into the bathroom to get ready for school, she discovered that Aunt Flow had decided to pay her a surprise visit, and there was no escaping it. The rush of emotions that followed was overwhelming; the realization that she had just started her period was a lot to handle. It was something she didn’t think would happen so soon, especially since, according to the period tracker app she diligently used, her period wasn’t supposed to arrive until Thursday. Currently, it was only Tuesday, and she felt a sense of confusion and frustration that it was two whole days early. Ashley wished she could predict these changes in her body, but it seemed like a futile endeavor, leaving her feeling a little less in control of her life than she had hoped.
She was sad and angry and bitter and just felt like crying. It wasn’t her fault, but Mabel couldn’t understand because, to her, anyone or anything that caused her perfect morning of catching a glimpse of her crush of the year, Peter Adam Eastsons, to not happen deserved bad things to happen to them or it. This frustration made Mabel’s rage feel all-consuming, and Ashley felt as if the world had conspired against her at that very moment. Which meant no matter what Ashley said, Mabel was going to be pissed off.
Ashley took a deep breath, hoping to find the right words to calm her sister, but she knew that nothing would break through Mabel’s stubbornness today. And yes, Ashley was fully aware of her little sister’s crush on her best friend Mary Ann Eastson’s little brother, Peter. It was no secret in their family, no matter how much Mabel liked to pretend that it was. Everyone in their family of nine knew that Mabel had a crush on Peter Adam Eastson, and it was often a source of teasing, which only served to deepen Mabel’s embarrassment. Even their little brother in kindergarten knew it, and he was only five years old, proudly parading around with the knowledge and turning it into an inside joke their family of nine, making Mabel’s cheeks flush with irritation each time he mentioned it.
Ashley sighed again as she headed into the middle school after her 6th grader sister. Less than a minute later, the school bell rang, signaling the five-minute warning for students to get to their classes. Breakfast was over, and Ashley, thanks to her period coming early, had caused Mabel to miss seeing her crush, the blue-eyed, strawberry-blond little brother of Mary Ann Eastson. The 14-year-old half-Chinese, half-German American was not happy with how her morning was going, but she could not do anything about it. So she simply shrugged her shoulders and headed for her locker. She was hoping to run into her best friend since 1st grade, Mary Ann Eastson, and ask her a favor. That favor being, of course, to call her little brother over before they head home this afternoon, so Mabel can get her daily dose of Peter. It was the least she could do since she was the reason her little sister could not see her crush this morning as she had planned.
As Ashley approached her locker, she felt a mix of anxiety and determination. She knew how important this was to Mabel, and if she could help restore even a bit of joy to her sister’s day, it would be worth it. The familiar hallway felt both comforting and confining, filled with the chatter of excited students, the sound of lockers slamming, and the faint perfume of breakfast lingering in the air along with students’ own body perfumes. Ashley glanced around, her eyes searching for the fire red-haired head of her best friend, Mary Ann.
With each passing moment, she felt a flutter of nerves. Would Mary Ann be understanding? Would she tease Mabel about her crush too? Ashley half-smirked to herself, recalling how Mabel often blushed crimson at the mere mention of Peter. Just then, she spotted Mary Ann at the far end of the hallway, but instead of chatting animatedly with a group of girls and boys as she usually did each morning, Mary Ann was storming Ashley Jetsons’ way.
As her fire red-haired, green-eyed best friend since 1st grade stormed towards Ashley, Jetsons wished that the ground would swallow her up. Was everyone in her life mad this morning? What was in the waters? First it was Mabel but that was her fault; then that man and his kids who honked at them this morning as they drove to school, and now even her best friend was angry?
And yes, Ashley knew Mary Ann Eastson was mad by the lack of crowd around her and the walk she was walking. Oh boy. This was going to be a long day. How was she going to ask Mary Ann for a favor when she was not happy? Oh boy.
“You would not believe the morning and week I am having right now!” Mary Ann greeted Ashley as she grew closer to the blue-eyed, jet black hair, half-white, half-Asian preteen.
“Oh?” Ashley greeted back, knowing when Mary Ann was like this it was just best to let her rant.
“Yeah! Can you believe it?” Mary Ann continued, her breath sounding short and uneven. “My parents are so annoying, but even more annoying is my little sister, Hana Mary!”
“Oh?” Ashley said as Mary Ann unlocked her locker.
“Yeah! Can you believe it? When I went home yesterday, guess what my parents said?”
“What?”
“Change of plans, we are going camping this weekend for Hannah Mary’s birthday!” Mary Ann’s voice raised, causing a couple of the students nearby to throw a glance their way. “Can you believe it?”
“Volume, Miss Eastson,” their 3rd period math teacher, Mrs. Brown, called from her classroom as Mary Ann’s voice rang loudly again. Mary Ann’s cheeks flushed pink.
“Sorry,” she called to their teacher, then lowered her voice and continued, “They are making us all cancel our plans for the weekend because of my younger sister’s silly wish of seeing the stars for her birthday.”
“Oh!” Ashley said, understanding the seriousness of the matter. This weekend was Mary Ann’s crush, Jason Matthew Tran’s party. Jason Matthew Tran was a half-black, half-Asian 8th-grade football player that Mary Ann Eastson had been crushing on like nobody’s business this year. It was because of him that she had taken up cheerleading, even though she didn’t like sweating a lot. Jason Matthew Tran was not only very sporty but very smart as well. He was always in the top 1% of their grade every time their grades were posted. People in their classes joked that he was good at sports because of his black mom and smart because of his Japanese dad. Black and yellow, they called him; best of both worlds.
Ashley didn’t know if it was racist or not that they called him that, but at least it was better than what they sometimes called other full Asians in their school. “Ching Chong” is what they called them. With her blue eyes and majority white features, most didn’t even know she was part Asian unless she told them, so it was never said towards her. And Jason, being half black, automatically made him cool, so it didn’t matter he was part Asian. But she had witnessed it being said to other full Asians by other students in their school. She sometimes wondered if Jason Matthew experienced the same thing too or if, because of his black half, the other students who said such things while holding their eyes towards full Asian students, even in her presence, never did in his because unlike her, he would have called them out. And yes, she was ashamed for not calling them out when she witnessed it last year, which is why this year she had decided to be more vocal when witnessing such things again.
“Yeah! It’s so not fair!” Mary Ann finished, then slammed her locker shut, and the two headed for their 1st period classes together. Ashley decided that as they headed for class, she would ask Mary Ann for that favor later when she was much more cool-headed. The thoughts of Mabel’s disappointment were still heavy on her mind, but for now, she focused on offering support to her best friend in what seemed to be a day filled with frustrations for both of them.
