The Eastsons Chapter 3

Go to Chapter 2

It was lunch, and Peter was feeling increasingly unsure of how he would break the news to his club members and teacher about the new developments in his personal life. As the vice president of the Anime and Gaming club at Winter Hills Middle School, he knew he had a responsibility to attend all club meetings and outings, which had been a pivotal part of his identity within the group. His dedication and flexibility with his time were what had initially caused him to win over Sarah Garcia during the elections back in August, when he had campaigned fiercely in hopes of making the club a welcoming and engaging environment for all members.

He had always been present at every meeting and convention, contributing ideas and fostering a sense of community among his peers. The club was more than just a group of friends gathering to discuss their favorite anime and games; it was a sanctuary for them, a place where they could express themselves without fear of judgment. Peter had invested so much of himself into making it a vibrant place, and losing his edge felt like losing a part of himself. But now, his sister’s desire to go camping to gaze at the stars, and their parents indulging her wish, were about to change everything.

Peter faced the looming prospect of missing the upcoming important anime and gaming convention, where he had planned to showcase his new ideas and possibly even run for president of the club in the next election. That was a title he had set his sights on, and he had already started envisioning ways he could innovate the club’s activities, from hosting tournaments to organizing themed movie nights. He was well aware of the competition; others were eager to take the helm and steer the club in new directions. There were whispers circulating about potential candidates, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that this absence would become a significant drawback, making it harder for him to secure the votes he needed. His commitment would be called into question, and that thought gnawed at him like a relentless itch he couldn’t scratch.

It was disheartening, to say the least. He was passionate about his club, and the thought of being sidelined due to circumstances beyond his control left him feeling frustrated and anxious about what the future might hold. He had poured so much energy into making the club a thriving space, creating an atmosphere where everyone felt welcomed and valued. The idea that he could lose it all because of a family obligation felt unjust. Why should he have to choose between his family and the friends he had worked so hard to support and build relationships with? It seemed unfair that he was being punished for simply being a good brother.

As he sat there, the cafeteria buzzing with chatter and laughter all around him, the weight of his thoughts only seemed to grow heavier. The laughter of his peers seemed to mock him, contrasting sharply with his internal turmoil. He felt a lump forming in his throat, the tears pricking at the corners of his eyes. It was not fair. He felt like crying just thinking about it, the injustice of it all threatening to spill over into the afternoon’s chaos.

Just then, a familiar voice broke through the fog of his thoughts. “Hey man,” Peter’s best friend since kindergarten, Thomas Jacklane, said, drawing the young strawberry-blond boy out of his thoughts and emotional breakdown. “You okay? You been awfully quiet the past two days. Something the matter?”

Thomas’s concern was palpable, and it served as a reminder that he wasn’t alone in this. However, Peter hesitated to share his feelings and thoughts, fearing it might add to their burdens, or that they would not fully understand the weight of his dilemma. Thomas, after all, was more into music and sports than into anime and gaming no matter how much Peter tried to get the young black preteen into the subject. Their friendship had always been a balancing act, where their different interests complemented rather than clashed. However, the offer of support from his friend was a glimmer of hope amidst the turmoil, and perhaps, just perhaps, it was time to confide in someone who cared even if they didn’t share the same passions.

“Yeah well you would be upset too if the plans for your weekend were changed dramatically thanks to an annoying little sister,” Peter explained, tossing his corns around on his lunch tray. On his soft pink lips was a scowl. “And your chances of moving up the ladder and becoming president ruined.” He could feel the heat of frustration rising in his cheeks, and he glanced up to see Thomas observing him with genuine concern.

“Okay…” Thomas said, a frown on his lips. He had no clue what Peter was referring to. “Explain.”

“Well!” Peter glanced down and continued stabbing a piece of corn on his sliver lunch tray as he did. “My wonderful parents,” he continued sarcastically, “have decided that the whole family is going camping for my sister Hana’s birthday this weekend!”

“Okay….”

“And do you know why that is bad?” The 12-year-old sixth-grader continued stabbing another piece of corn, his eyebrows knotted.

“No….?”

“Its our club annual Anime and Gaming convention at the local Winter Hills university. I, as the vice president of said club, am going to miss it!”

“Okay…?”

“Do you know how that looks on my resume come the coming election in August of next year?”

“Not….good?”

“You got that right! Not good!” Peter shouted, causing students and teachers around them to turn and stare. Thomas felt like the earth should swallow him whole. Peter noticed nothing, consumed by his own frustrations.

“It’s not just about missing the convention, you know? It’s about what it represents. I was ready to show everyone what I’ve been working on, to share my passion. Now, it feels like all that hard work is going to be wasted just because my family wants to go stargazing!” His voice wavered, revealing the raw emotion simmering beneath the surface. “I mean, why should I have to sacrifice my dreams because my sister wants to see the stars? It’s ridiculous! And what if someone else comes in and steals my spotlight while I’m gone? I can’t let that happen!” He couldn’t shake the feeling of anxiety that grew stronger with every passing moment.

Thomas shifted in his seat, trying to process Peter’s outburst. “Look, man,” he said, trying to find the right words, “I get it. Family stuff can be annoying. But maybe you can find a way to work this out? Can’t you talk to your parents or something?”

Peter sighed, rubbing his temples in frustration. “I already tried, but they didn’t take me seriously. To them, it’s just a club. They don’t understand how much this means to me.”

The realization hit Thomas. This wasn’t just about a missed event; it was about the sense of identity and belonging that Peter had cultivated through the club. “What if we come up with a plan? Like a video call via Skype or something. You know like the kind rapper River View do every Saturday.” Peter didn’t know who Rapper River View was but he was liking the idea. “You can share with the club while you’re away? You can still be part of it, just in a different way.”

Peter looked at Thomas, considering the suggestion. “You might be onto something there.” The glimmer of hope sparked in his eyes. “Maybe I can convince my club teacher Mr. Livington to do a live stream from the university via YouTube or Skype. I’d still be able to connect with everyone even if I’m not physically there.”

“Exactly!” Thomas encouraged, a smile breaking on his face. “You could still showcase your ideas and keep your presence felt. Just virtually.”

Peter felt a wave of relief wash over him, grateful for his friend’s support. Perhaps this dilemma didn’t have to completely derail his ambitions after all. The strawberry-blond boy glanced up from his corn stabbing, and his smile was dazzling. He was invigorated with new energy, ideas flooding his mind as he considered the possibilities. He could create a virtual presentation of sorts, where he could integrate fun elements that would engage his club members, like quizzes related to their favorite shows or games. He could even work with Mr. Livington to brainstorm some fun interactive segments that could keep everyone entertained and connected during his absence.

The thought of being still involved, despite being miles away from the convention, filled Peter with excitement. It was a perfect compromise that would allow him to maintain his role in the club while still fulfilling his family obligations. This could even strengthen his position, showing how dedicated he truly was, despite the challenges he faced. He could make it an event in itself where he directly interacted with his peers virtually, presenting his ideas, sharing updates, and even collaborating on projects during the convention.

Peter’s heart raced at the prospect. “I have to discuss this with Mr. Livington later today” His mind swirled with the imagined reactions of his clubmates. They would support him, and this could turn into something really incredible—an innovative way to stay involved even when he couldn’t be there physically.

As the bell rang to signal the end of lunch, Peter’s resolve solidified. He and Thomas gathered their things and made their way out of the cafeteria, their conversation buzzing with excitement about the plan. Peter felt lighter, his worries dissipating like mist in the sunlight as he realized that sometimes, with a little creativity and support, even the toughest situations could be navigated successfully. Today could be the beginning of something new, not just for him, but for the whole club.

*******

It was 5:30, which meant the end of the Anime and Gaming club’s Wednesday meeting. Peter Adam Eastsons glanced around the classroom, filled with excitement and a tinge of nervousness. It was time to go home, either by walking or being picked up by parents and relatives; the members, ranging from 12 to 14 years old, were invariably buzzing with stories to share about their latest gaming adventures or anime episodes. They animatedly discussed the latest plot twists and character developments, each eager to recount their unique experiences. But for Peter, today was different. He had some important matters to discuss with Mr. Livington, the club’s teacher.

As he waited for the last few club members to filter out of the classroom, Peter’s thoughts raced. The school’s hallways would soon become quiet, and he would finally have a moment alone with Mr. Livington. Peter had a burning question about the upcoming weekend and some unexpected changes to his plans that he needed to clarify. Just a few days prior, his parents had raised an issue that could significantly affect his weekend, and he felt an urgent need to address it. He could feel a mixture of anticipation and anxiety welling up inside him, making it hard to focus on the chatter around him.

Finally, after the last of the students packed their bags and hurried out the door, Peter seized the moment and approached his after-school club teacher. Mr. Livington stood tall, his presence commanding with a broad frame and a friendly demeanor. He was a big man from Jamaica, with striking features that would make anyone guess at first glance that he was a football coach. However, most were surprised to learn that he was simply a math teacher during the school day, dedicating his evenings to overseeing the anime and gaming club on Mondays and Wednesdays.

The dichotomy of his identity amazed Peter and his friends. It was hard for them to reconcile the image of a typically serious math teacher with the fun-loving, energetic person who encouraged their passion for anime and gaming. Mr. Livington had a unique ability to bridge the gap between the worlds of academics and hobbies, making the club a welcoming and thrilling environment. Members often joked about how he could turn a lesson on integers into a lively discussion about character stats in their favorite role-playing games, giving everyone a reason to look forward to math class. Peter felt fortunate to have him as a mentor, especially after their last teacher, Mrs. Roselen, left due to her military husband being stationed elsewhere. It left the students uncertain about their future, but Mr. Livington had stepped in seamlessly, injecting enthusiasm and energy into the club and ensuring that its spirit persisted.

With a deep breath, Peter summoned the courage to approach him. “Mr. Livington, do you have a moment?” he asked, his voice steady despite the flutter of nerves in his stomach. Mr. Livington turned with a warm smile, his blue shirt matching the spark of Peter’s blue eyes. “Of course, Peter. What’s on your mind?” The big tall black man said, smiling. His genuine interest made Peter feel a little more at ease.

“It’s about the weekend,” Peter began, gathering his thoughts as they settled into a corner of the classroom with a bit more privacy. This time, he didn’t want to rush; he wanted to ensure that he addressed everything that was bothering him. He explained the situation regarding his parents and how their unexpected plan might change everything he had been looking forward to. Mr. Livington listened intently, nodding at intervals, offering encouraging words and sparking ideas about how to navigate the tricky situation. Peter could see the kindness and wisdom in Mr. Livington’s eyes, and that gave him a sense of relief.

As they continued their conversation, Peter slowly felt that familiar sense of companionship he had always found within the club. There was an understanding here, a connection that transcended the ordinary school environment. It was moments like this that reassured him everything would be okay. Maybe his week wasn’t going to be the worst one ever thanks to his best friend Thomas and the invention of Skype. The thought of spending time with his friends and discussing video games and new anime releases over a video call began to lift his spirits, reminding him that no matter what happened, he would be okay. Maybe seeing the stars with his family won’t be that bad either.
